maintained for a few years.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>There were
several older trees with dead branches that needed trimmed, and wild
honeysuckle everywhere.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The honeysuckle
had grown into shrubs the size of small trees.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>The honeysuckle “trees” were approximately 10’ tall and formed a tunnel
shape at the back of the property.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We
liked the tunnel affect but they needed to be pruned in order to be able to mow
around them.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p>We spent the whole weekend working in this area of the yard
pruning, clearing, shaping the trees. We
had a large burn pile and were burning the wood. I had wanted to construct an arch made out of
branches for years and realized I had an abundance of wood I was burning. I
told hubby to stop burning until the next day, and I began constructing an arch
at the entrance to our honeysuckle “tree” tunnel.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix97x39KxGn8szkXGwpYE7pzOYMHvUBF6SfMlHs6RudFqFOr7QqWZBC1wOpLqds3A0IyXGbgN0Y84nEVLKX-vpSEYiQvcLABktprPgjS76FHqIEFhvoVV3eUbDbKIUeH5Fy7bEhelVkQkq/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="290" data-original-width="428" height="217" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix97x39KxGn8szkXGwpYE7pzOYMHvUBF6SfMlHs6RudFqFOr7QqWZBC1wOpLqds3A0IyXGbgN0Y84nEVLKX-vpSEYiQvcLABktprPgjS76FHqIEFhvoVV3eUbDbKIUeH5Fy7bEhelVkQkq/" width="320" /></a></div><br />I started by pounding a steel fence post on each side where
I wanted the base of the arch to be. I
measured the mower deck to make sure it would easily fit thru the hole and
added several inches to the width.
(Hubby mows a bit too fast sometimes and things tend to get
bumped). Once the steel fence posts were
installed I started looking for tall limbs to use for the sides of the arch.<p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">You can see a few of the branches laying on the ground and
the area where the arch would be constructed.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">(Note: this was my first attempt to make an arch.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I recommend using zip ties or wire to attach
the first limbs instead of twine. After assembling this arch I went back and
screwed the limbs together.) <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Once you have your branches you want to lay them out so you
can see the shape and size of each one.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Once you have selected a branch you think is the right size
and shape you will need to trim all the small or size branches that are not
growing in the direction you need, and small stuff.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Your pruned branches should look like the two in the
foreground above.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Once you have your branches trimmed down to the main branch
you are ready to begin assembly. (Note:<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>I did not trim the length of my branches until I added them to the arch
so I could custom fit them to the spot where they fit best.)<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">(To begin assembly of the arch I installed a steel fence
post on each side of this sidewalk where I want my arch)<o:p></o:p></p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0iy7bX05r1-wfKDfkumLNgNC-OBls9Wy_m0yekSjwW9Yk-Bz6OwP7J_iyMMm12YCHOvUOXnG_0CgSxynC5Lth4YV8hRyMr_pnWFMkXxtvGyO4wBG4pyswZM8h6Zy3IxKbajyOnsMok7iB/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="314" data-original-width="235" height="254" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0iy7bX05r1-wfKDfkumLNgNC-OBls9Wy_m0yekSjwW9Yk-Bz6OwP7J_iyMMm12YCHOvUOXnG_0CgSxynC5Lth4YV8hRyMr_pnWFMkXxtvGyO4wBG4pyswZM8h6Zy3IxKbajyOnsMok7iB/w202-h254/image.png" width="202" /></a></div><br /><p class="MsoNormal">You can also see that I was trying to find branches that were
curved on one end, and as tall as possible. If the branch was entirely too
long, I typically cut off a section of the straight end to ensure the curved
part of the limb was in the general area where I wanted the arch.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>(see above) Once I had several branches
secured to the steel posts and starting to form the arch sides I began using my
screw gun and screws to attach the branches to one another for stability.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I used a variety of screw lengths depending
on how large the branch diameter was.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>(These
pictures are for reference only – it is not the same arch shown above… it is to
show you the technique of how to get started)<o:p></o:p></p>

I want to share one of my favorite garden art pieces.<br />
<br />
It was originally a table top sculpture I found on clearance at Hobby Lobby.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2SNTVYe1riAlX4GEYaDN3s_iRillIctV7Eh2zTC4zNRpHen2jmNksebSAbt4nwsqlUAwFEeOrWNUH0WWVx6pQF4Hcc5v9IfMQk5kUU7g-DnJ-hNdXwO39yrbdCfvyDaMtIPMwZfwVwqVq/s1600/IMG_5074.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="740" data-original-width="555" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2SNTVYe1riAlX4GEYaDN3s_iRillIctV7Eh2zTC4zNRpHen2jmNksebSAbt4nwsqlUAwFEeOrWNUH0WWVx6pQF4Hcc5v9IfMQk5kUU7g-DnJ-hNdXwO39yrbdCfvyDaMtIPMwZfwVwqVq/s320/IMG_5074.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I thought it was interesting, and it reminded me of a flower, so I brought it home with me.<br />
<br />
It needed some color to bring out the flower characteristics. I tried painting it purple with pink tips, but it didn't pop. So, I decided to try yellow and purple. Much better.<br />
<br />

Once I had it painted, I cut off the base using bolt cutters. I left the "stem" so I could mount it outside. I had a piece of copper pipe I hammered into the ground, and I inserted the stem into the pipe opening. <br />

<br />
I started with a scrap 1" x 12" board. Once I had a drawing I liked, I traced it out of a file folder so it would be stiff enough for me to trace onto wood.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTgSDIdETiZN9o2ag9yqrNfruBajhu8cJaP3cXJA8LGpMCcaOEnpl-PBHSuxgxEl7gNHCfm_Jj3-hpk7rDMc7rjj_NhcP4FYZpv3oyMu0HJqw2haeVbHOV_ivbhmhRBpxWJzC91hserJOe/s1600/fave+pumpkin+pattern.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTgSDIdETiZN9o2ag9yqrNfruBajhu8cJaP3cXJA8LGpMCcaOEnpl-PBHSuxgxEl7gNHCfm_Jj3-hpk7rDMc7rjj_NhcP4FYZpv3oyMu0HJqw2haeVbHOV_ivbhmhRBpxWJzC91hserJOe/s320/fave+pumpkin+pattern.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I originally made this a couple of years ago, but it needed repainted. I decided my pumpkin needed a new look. So I started by painting the main body orange. The stem was brown previously so I left as is for now.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_RD-Nj2_WWVHx7GrYaZZqObsweNgPoRKZEAEYgylfK8PvHaWPo2Dvf-spg2Thfx3JN5ao8vthXBrggD9_AhPBMrp4emHa9FZCq0hHMcC5Htw7rOz4zKIKEXRFyPUzdjR0zcM_qMwwNH0C/s1600/pumpkin+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_RD-Nj2_WWVHx7GrYaZZqObsweNgPoRKZEAEYgylfK8PvHaWPo2Dvf-spg2Thfx3JN5ao8vthXBrggD9_AhPBMrp4emHa9FZCq0hHMcC5Htw7rOz4zKIKEXRFyPUzdjR0zcM_qMwwNH0C/s320/pumpkin+1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can see in this pic that it originally had a scrap wood nose, and I had originally painted on white eyes and mouth. This time I wanted to add more dimension with some type of eyes. I decided on round wood drawer pulls but I didn't like them as is. I ended up cutting the back off so they sat closer to the pumpkin. I glued them on and I like the dimension they give my project.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used five colors on my pumpkin. Orange, brown, green, white and yellow. Now, I am by NO means a painter, so I looked on pinterest and the internet for paintings of pumpkins to get some ideas on how to paint it. This is how I did mine.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3JgaQZXZzNQtvf0bjs_Z2Sbdr3vgTo9dnE6WdXw9mtRt2rZz3jRCXgaqFFEHhDp63rYh67t28PGId0Djm2rUqW-RYKu7TVrdvzf7Lz-87HZMmpmlQYiJyXYySq0K2GfQXiu_d3dov_Npi/s1600/pumpkin+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3JgaQZXZzNQtvf0bjs_Z2Sbdr3vgTo9dnE6WdXw9mtRt2rZz3jRCXgaqFFEHhDp63rYh67t28PGId0Djm2rUqW-RYKu7TVrdvzf7Lz-87HZMmpmlQYiJyXYySq0K2GfQXiu_d3dov_Npi/s320/pumpkin+2.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
At this point I wasn't sure I had made the right choice, the brown, white and green seemed so bright and now what I was thinking. But as I blended more, added yellow and softened everything up it started looking better. I blended the nose in and added the eyes.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is my finished pumpkin. I personally adore it. I blended colors into the stem also, to create depth, I like his heady little eyes, his nose, everything. There isn't anything perfect about it, but I admire imperfection, so it's perfect for me.</div>

<br />
I made a pinecone flower wreath a couple of weeks ago. I used various size and type of pinecones, acorns, moss, flower seed pods, and some old poppy seed cones I had left over from another project. I cut the large pine cones to resemble flowers and painted them with fall colors. <br />

They are so easy to make, you won't be able to resist making more than one!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpuK0TVJe66MMfAkfsf4wrz2UnzwdTTtSSBDWAWLVFGP1TyZJQgqgmhsMLcc3Pg9NJOS3ScAYZE84KxW8yaEn9NKNJ3qklRVEpRGt6Tck15SdElOJ6AVp8VDbtyKrR3D5B_Aiu8aAcmPDx/s1600/plate+flowers+I%2527ve+made.jpe" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="476" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpuK0TVJe66MMfAkfsf4wrz2UnzwdTTtSSBDWAWLVFGP1TyZJQgqgmhsMLcc3Pg9NJOS3ScAYZE84KxW8yaEn9NKNJ3qklRVEpRGt6Tck15SdElOJ6AVp8VDbtyKrR3D5B_Aiu8aAcmPDx/s640/plate+flowers+I%2527ve+made.jpe" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I have been collecting supplies from thrift stores and finally had enough for all of us. If you look closely at the picture you will be able to tell I have tried to make them using a variety of different things. I especially enjoyed mixing in metal pieces. I used an old light fixture on one, and one reminds me of an exotic jungle flower.<br />
<br />
<br />
I added bead stamens to this one.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigHU-9VSGQRHMFLFdQA2qMcuNvcEW8uf1qNLpWMVYDkNpi_Z5rgJEORX0ZtmggCNo3pIL-l2fc2UUXTF9o4Wea7wWVMwYtcLdsk71G43kgKYDDFmvELVjyw3iVEQ81IbNN1HrJf6DReP5e/s1600/plate+flowers.jpe" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigHU-9VSGQRHMFLFdQA2qMcuNvcEW8uf1qNLpWMVYDkNpi_Z5rgJEORX0ZtmggCNo3pIL-l2fc2UUXTF9o4Wea7wWVMwYtcLdsk71G43kgKYDDFmvELVjyw3iVEQ81IbNN1HrJf6DReP5e/s320/plate+flowers.jpe" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I really like this one. I like the mix of silver and copper, and wavy edges, textures and color.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
This one doesn't have any metal but I love the shapes and colors.<br />
<br />
I hope if you decide to create a plate flower, you have as much fun as we did!<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I wanted to load a video of our wind spinner spinning but I couldn't get it to work, so above is a picture. The video is much better. If you want to see the video you can visit my facebook page.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have always been fascinated by kinetic sculptures and have been wanting to try making one. The one I made (with help from my husband) (I had no idea bicycles had bearings in them) is the simplest form of wind spinner, but I hope to make a better one in the future. Here's how we made this one.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you know me, you know I normally make my projects out of things I have on hand, or things that are easily found, inexpensive and recycled. I am the queen of thrift and upcycling. My projects require more creativity and work than $.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I removed the wheel from a medium sized bike. I also dis-assembled an old steamer. I wanted something small, and light weight to catch the wind. I thought the steamer fins would work perfect, and you can usually find these old steamers at the thrift store. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDW0zI7ukimqdat8lEtqLlbRLseA1cADNHnSzw4dtD2LSOdRfaFHh2rolEomQRzHOlJTdR46pX5zkoqhbAK1TrULUNANVycUuFbQ-uAuB8QUF6pmZBi2oIxZFb50u-SGXeBFUQf-kZ6Ktc/s1600/bike+wheel+spinner+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDW0zI7ukimqdat8lEtqLlbRLseA1cADNHnSzw4dtD2LSOdRfaFHh2rolEomQRzHOlJTdR46pX5zkoqhbAK1TrULUNANVycUuFbQ-uAuB8QUF6pmZBi2oIxZFb50u-SGXeBFUQf-kZ6Ktc/s320/bike+wheel+spinner+1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I bent the end of the steamer fin so it would stand up using a pair of pliers. The fins are soft and easy to bend. To attach the steamer fins to the bike rim I loosened the screw holding the wheel spokes and slid the bent steamer fin underneath. Then I re-tightened the screw. I placed them at a slight angle to catch the wind. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had pictures of the whole process until I got a new phone and they didn't transfer to my new phone as promised :( So, you're going to need to use your imagination a bit for the rest.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We put the rim back onto the bike where it had been previously, minus the pedals, chain etc. If you look closely at the picture below you can see the front of the bicycle is upside down.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you look at the picture below, the part on the pole is where the handlebars used to be. Basically the bike is turned upside down. We cut off the back of the bike. The part to the left that catches the wind used to attach the seat and the back part of the bike. We covered this section with some aluminum flashing we had on hand. Hubby helped a lot in this part. He cut the bike apart with the sawsall, and riveted the aluminum sheeting on. I was going to use screws to attach the aluminum sheeting to the bike frame. We added the aluminum sheeting to both sides. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To get the shape of the sheeting to match the bike, I laid the aluminum flashing under this section of the bike and traced the shape with a pencil. I then cut it out with tin snips. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLFpQRsCM6OABVv5I6TD5rpNXkfUlofBuBCq1pcMD6DfYl5LFVH8Czan5YBycncK5z2TMHTXgfU6vJy0eEzl8iLGb0VesATD-VT55d5Ure94lJJKC8pclT79_W8k09aTWTtRhLM_df0kaz/s1600/wheel+spinner+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLFpQRsCM6OABVv5I6TD5rpNXkfUlofBuBCq1pcMD6DfYl5LFVH8Czan5YBycncK5z2TMHTXgfU6vJy0eEzl8iLGb0VesATD-VT55d5Ure94lJJKC8pclT79_W8k09aTWTtRhLM_df0kaz/s320/wheel+spinner+4.jpg" width="260" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I know it's kinda primitive and basic but we sure enjoy watching it spin in the breeze. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You could easily pretty it up by threading beads onto the spokes, painting it bright colors,etc. Just try to keep it light. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you make one please share, and have fun!</div>

Basically, an excuse to have a witch themed costume party. It is being held in our back yard, and she has invited friends old and new, near and far. So, I've been working on my attire.<br />
<br />
My first thought was basic witch everyone else does, then my daughter told me that there are lots of different types of witches. This thought reminded me of Radagast the Brown in Lord of the Rings. So, I decided I would be a forest witch. You know I have to be different. So, this is what I've been working on. <br />
<br />
I picked up a Halloween mask for $1 and ripped off the feathers and trim it had on it. I then painted it flat green and brown. I then glued tree bark over the nose area, added a dried mushroom, pinecone, acorn, lichen, moss, sticks..... and more bark. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjORidg3tAcbxztoAcA41Bg81poOx_bAD3kKcnDktyTytlxJo7q02__tdzJ3uUtyzP7aQmcD_04vLpZDWmXI2nNKWeG_4wtYEmzhyphenhyphen9LVR5OPJcDJEGfH550nD44D5KSH18oE4aPgqvc2cab/s1600/forest+witch+mask.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjORidg3tAcbxztoAcA41Bg81poOx_bAD3kKcnDktyTytlxJo7q02__tdzJ3uUtyzP7aQmcD_04vLpZDWmXI2nNKWeG_4wtYEmzhyphenhyphen9LVR5OPJcDJEGfH550nD44D5KSH18oE4aPgqvc2cab/s320/forest+witch+mask.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPoAjRVef583fY08Ji2drNA-TcMEoc2W2d728sxFbQG70mhPseqmnV1HFCZJCqRa5wyB-hLPwBqF3KH8vJWoR0-AxO4BqpQNllU0CNkteelgUfNyutPNLV6HfAjFvJLLI48kJIJ1334k7a/s1600/mask+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPoAjRVef583fY08Ji2drNA-TcMEoc2W2d728sxFbQG70mhPseqmnV1HFCZJCqRa5wyB-hLPwBqF3KH8vJWoR0-AxO4BqpQNllU0CNkteelgUfNyutPNLV6HfAjFvJLLI48kJIJ1334k7a/s320/mask+2.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
I am pleased with the way it turned out. <br />
<br />
Now for my witch hat. I decided to go with the traditional witch hat shape, but with a forest twist. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvFeySeN28h1KpYNUgSJY8aWiQvCvah0G1h4sSiMj-UJ1JbXrlUy6DIHIycuJySXOB9uGGS-UQi7sQ8Sf-rIzlWxXnwN62Kz50Hl-SqYlL6thrtHOdJ8zm_GZjvxCZPHptbqnqRhY4LG1U/s1600/forest+witch+hat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvFeySeN28h1KpYNUgSJY8aWiQvCvah0G1h4sSiMj-UJ1JbXrlUy6DIHIycuJySXOB9uGGS-UQi7sQ8Sf-rIzlWxXnwN62Kz50Hl-SqYlL6thrtHOdJ8zm_GZjvxCZPHptbqnqRhY4LG1U/s320/forest+witch+hat.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
I inserted a Styrofoam cone shape into the top portion of the hat for stability. <br />
<br />
I gathered pieces of bark that our pine trees had shed and glued them onto the conical portion of the hat. I added several types of moss, lychen, berries, acorns, pinecones, etc to cover the areas between the bark. I used a piece of ivy and wound around the conical section for more stability and interest. <br />
<br />
I am working on my attire, but am happy with the hat and mask so far.<br />
<br />
What do you think? Will I look earthy and project the image of a forest witch, or do I need to start over?<br />

FOUND OBJECT OWLS<o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
I have made a parliament of found object owls and installed them in the pine
trees surrounding our garden. I know these aren't everyone's "cup of
tea" but they amuse me, and will amuse my grandkids.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
Here are some pics of the details so you can see how I made them. I
used 2 standing graters, a silver plated platter and a large black enamel lid
off a canning pot for the owl bodies. I gathered the lids off water
bottles, soda and beer caps, and lids from various foods such as
pickles, pesto, dried beef, and even two red lids off the Kentucky Fried
Chicken carry out containers. I used whatever I could find, which made
each a bit different. <o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
I very lightly spray painted the graters brown. I didn't want them to be perfect, I wanted light and dark on them, so they looked a little more like feathers, as you can see in the picture below. The owl below has wings made out of an old metal steamer. I removed the "fins or petals" and threw the main part of the steamer away. I bent the fins at the end to make a right angel and using a small bolt attached the wing. On the other side of the grater I had to drill a hold to insert the bolt. You attach a nut to the inside to hold them tight. (see bolt in picture)<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These bottle caps had a smiling sun in the middle but I punched holes in the middle to add my bolts. I also punched a hole in the cap and lid underneath. If you look close you can see these lids don't match, but they are close in size and both white. I used a small pair of old pliers I had in my scrap box as the beak and ears. I added a bolt to the middle and a nut to the inside of the grater to hold it securely.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On this owl I spray painted the top of two lids the same size, and then added beer bottle caps on top of those for the eyes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(These lids had lots of writing on top. I didn't want that, and I wanted a pop of color to attract your eye.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used two mis-matched spatula's for the wings on this owl. You can see they are similar in shape and size, but not exactly the same. I used a small screwdriver to pry the spatula apart from the handle.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used an old wrench for the beak on this one, and bent the top of the grater for the ears. I had to drill a hold in the wrench and grater to attach it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The wrench nose wasn't showing against the brown grater, up so I added a bit of yellow paint to the beak portion of the wrench.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This owl is made from an old silver plated platter. The beak is an old spring. I drilled two small holes under the spring and used a piece of wire to hold it in place. The eyes are two pickle jar lids, a deeper lid, and christmas bells from the Dollar Store. I glued these onto the platter, and one another using GE II clear silicone. I let them dry for two days before installing them. The ears on this one are clips I found in my junk stash, held on with more bolts. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I found it easier to use a metal punch on the platter when making holes than the drill, as I didn't have a small metal bit.</div>

<br />
I'm sharing these scrap wood hearts I made. I made a small one for an Eco Art Fest. It needed to be made from recycled, up-cycled, objects. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJAYgepAGFgz013YljgpNLPhhvieqSx84KH9lbmcwK0h-kQO8uaBJ8rbY_5t-4rAe7R-x4HBKB-khEntNAb5hN73LxRmXT8xBNRUWEfvh1ESsf4bP1ECOhZNS2wf9uglabgHI5NXZm6DW_/s1600/small+scrap+wood+heart.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJAYgepAGFgz013YljgpNLPhhvieqSx84KH9lbmcwK0h-kQO8uaBJ8rbY_5t-4rAe7R-x4HBKB-khEntNAb5hN73LxRmXT8xBNRUWEfvh1ESsf4bP1ECOhZNS2wf9uglabgHI5NXZm6DW_/s1600/small+scrap+wood+heart.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
This one is made from old wood lath, a piece of fancy trim, a wood dowel, a wooden chair rung, and a piece of an old trim board. I wanted it to be dimensional so I added the round wood pieces (dowel, chair rung etc.) To finish it off I added an old key. I started by drawing a heart shape on a very thin piece of wood paneling. I cut the paneling out with a jigsaw. Then I gathered up wood scraps that I could cut to shape. I decided on the pattern I wanted, what direction I wanted to lay the boards and then started cutting them to shape following the heart pattern I had cut out. Once cut I used carpenters wood glue and short nails to attach the boards to the pattern. I tried to cut the wood pieces a little bit longer than the pattern so it wasn't visible. Some of my boards were thin, so I had to shorten the small nails with side cutters. <br />
<br />
My daughter Rachel wanted me to make her a large one for her birthday. Here is the one I made for her.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpnG_y5mscXVMdkYxGaODHTfnTQWE-_5Gvvh8zRz2bDYhIjE9-FL_B62wcvtDWzm55n8bTpeh3V08mWjqFu3-W9lyePXlDLbcpd5zcEpDbGqSATSOx-sPyWmL46yYfWMvkqcRdb8Urcy7i/s1600/Rachel's%2Bscrap%2Bwood%2Bheart.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpnG_y5mscXVMdkYxGaODHTfnTQWE-_5Gvvh8zRz2bDYhIjE9-FL_B62wcvtDWzm55n8bTpeh3V08mWjqFu3-W9lyePXlDLbcpd5zcEpDbGqSATSOx-sPyWmL46yYfWMvkqcRdb8Urcy7i/s1600/Rachel's%2Bscrap%2Bwood%2Bheart.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This one is made out of scrap wood lath, an old wood curtain rod with grooves in it, a piece of wainscoting cap, some chippy white crown molding, delicate gold trim, two old rulers, a chair rung, and then I added a crusty cupboard lock, an old key and a small piece of ruler. You can tell how large this one is compared to the glass and paper plate. I really enjoyed making these, but it took me several hours to find the right pieces to give me the look and pattern I wanted. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another scrap project is this dragonfly I made out of an old wooden rocker arm, some scrap wood trim pieces, and some found object eyes. I think it turned out cute.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

BTW my daughter Rachel helped A LOT with the painting and finish work. Thank you Rachel.<br />
<br />
<br />
I looked at scare crows online and then came up with my version of a couple I liked. His head is one piece of wood, then I used old wood lathe to create the hat brim, and gave some a pine cone flower on their hat brim. Then added an old shirt, and crow to some of their shoulders. I thought they turned out pretty cute. I gave them crazy noses made out of scrap wood, and barbed wire mouths.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
I also made a bunch of different wood pumpkins but these are some of my favorites. Rachel helped me paint them and add unique features to each.<br />
<br />
I made a pattern for the whimsical shaped pumpkin and I LOVE IT. It is so cute. (at least to me :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And this one is my fave shape. I drew it out on paper and then made a stencil out of an old manila folder. I made them in three different sizes. I love the long curvy stems.</div>

You don't want her sticking her big nose in your business. <br />
<br />
Rosie was fun to make, and super easy to do.<br />
<br />
I used wooden dowel rods to hold the pumpkins together. I staked the bottom pumpkin into the dirt of the old kettle where flowers were done blooming. I then used the dowel and poked a hold in the bottom of the "head" pumpkin so I could slide it on once it was in place. I then staked the middle pumpkin to the bottom pumpkin making sure the dowel remained exposed on top so I could slide her head onto it.<br />
<br />
I added a strip of burlap for a scarf and an old cowboy hat I had bought at a yard sale. I used two long nails with a head to attach the hat so it wouldn't blow away.<br />
<br />
We have been enjoying Rosie for several weeks and she is still looking good.<br />

I had the vision, and he figured out how to make my vision reality. <br />
<br />
A neighbor had a trampoline damaged in a storm, and being the re-cycler aka hoarder I am, I brought some of the frame home to use in projects. Here is a section we turned into a wind chime that stand about 4 1/2' high.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoPVX-LxWDAydmg1Q5V5L13hPTRnV4B_afmyyEPorBuQbYK80z6q_LXAs7RFbFffpBKUxShmwh6rPVMRXHohEMN4wZkbLP6IyJktSCFuv0vjzUCxAyvpg3CHoIodwZkNYm_5slnW6WOndy/s1600/wind+chime.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoPVX-LxWDAydmg1Q5V5L13hPTRnV4B_afmyyEPorBuQbYK80z6q_LXAs7RFbFffpBKUxShmwh6rPVMRXHohEMN4wZkbLP6IyJktSCFuv0vjzUCxAyvpg3CHoIodwZkNYm_5slnW6WOndy/s1600/wind+chime.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
Here is how we made it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvWvHDBnHmYztBW6q5jEUihyphenhyphenp1Jp0ncHf6A6FRuWpwaQkT99OHJAIs7v-r6Ee6chqtOHK5A8LKc_gdOYgYZDL7EmDHIOb4uK5SA6YgKr69JMItfztAvuNp-d6zM2sm7N8yh-avdAwa-iX5/s1600/tramp+frame.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvWvHDBnHmYztBW6q5jEUihyphenhyphenp1Jp0ncHf6A6FRuWpwaQkT99OHJAIs7v-r6Ee6chqtOHK5A8LKc_gdOYgYZDL7EmDHIOb4uK5SA6YgKr69JMItfztAvuNp-d6zM2sm7N8yh-avdAwa-iX5/s1600/tramp+frame.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
The part you see at the top of the picture is in the ground, and we trimmed off the curved part in the bottom right of the picture, making an L shape. <br />
<br />
<br />
I cut 5 pieces of scrap copper pipe in graduated sizes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0_XSfSgCZlP44xHtwCjmwLk3mScwHman628_S2QHFhNwfsAu6YiV6gblGBXjbXDusUkETdx4aLqUiJweNYFB731OHHEOZ0Kwj22lMRJDH1qXg-D6T35q-IA2BKcgqoUh70vC3ow9RHtSM/s1600/pipe.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0_XSfSgCZlP44xHtwCjmwLk3mScwHman628_S2QHFhNwfsAu6YiV6gblGBXjbXDusUkETdx4aLqUiJweNYFB731OHHEOZ0Kwj22lMRJDH1qXg-D6T35q-IA2BKcgqoUh70vC3ow9RHtSM/s1600/pipe.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We drilled holes in the top of each copper pipe.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEafXERHKP6UVlJiIXk0BSgSfRY2YqxZ7-4SKEXlsFx4bj61UhDNSGM1mWijC6TZJ6oYhzpJJap_rR_uo791C3bzM2DSKW9tdrCJEE_AZwVsZdfVdOtp_DqMXLmGfHEtxqF2Au6XbGLiRO/s1600/holes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEafXERHKP6UVlJiIXk0BSgSfRY2YqxZ7-4SKEXlsFx4bj61UhDNSGM1mWijC6TZJ6oYhzpJJap_rR_uo791C3bzM2DSKW9tdrCJEE_AZwVsZdfVdOtp_DqMXLmGfHEtxqF2Au6XbGLiRO/s1600/holes.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And holes in the bottom of the trampoline frame. We threaded fishing line thru the holes in the trampoline frame to hang the copper pipe.</div>
<br />
<br />

<br />
I wanted to add some pops of color to my yard, in addition to extra spots for the birds and butterflies to hang out. So I created these bird baths out of pretty bowls of various sizes, blue beer bottles, vases, candle holders etc. There are more of these in my immediate future, and some will probably end up as Christmas gifts. Here are some I've made this summer....<br />

I found this really large drill bit at the flea market in the early spring, and immediately knew what I wanted it to be. So I paid the man $5, took it home and created.....<br />

She is was out of an old window shutter, a brass candle bowl, wings made from pieces of an old barrel, and rebar for legs.<br />
<br />
I laid my shutter on my workbench and started laying different boards, spindles etc. behind it for wings. I originally made this to display at an Eco Fest last fall. So, it needed to be made entirely of recycled objects. That's right up my alley!!!<br />
<br />
I had a window shutter about 36" tall. I decided to use boards from an old barrel for the wings. I love the rough texture and curve of these pieces. I used the adjustment pieces of wood that came with the shutter as arms. I decided on the angel I wanted and cut the top to fit the shutter. I then cut them to the length I wanted the arms. They were as long as the shutter and I don't know about you, but my arms aren't as long as my body.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I added a brass candle bowl for a head and rebar for legs so the shutter doesn't sit on the ground and wick moisture.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's the finished angel when I added it to my garden in early spring.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBzRlP4A9bJauFLAE3uHT_42I685Qh2XzxZR2ldTOr3OfVHJ1E-nlq-qnhPrDSCuP7Qq4YjUCXaQBPHOlk8WOK-B4KLB4fC63vBn9eC6EdvFIw4DjxrHVBgB5uL1qYkI14oD3_p6NQ14Xt/s1600/shutter+angel+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBzRlP4A9bJauFLAE3uHT_42I685Qh2XzxZR2ldTOr3OfVHJ1E-nlq-qnhPrDSCuP7Qq4YjUCXaQBPHOlk8WOK-B4KLB4fC63vBn9eC6EdvFIw4DjxrHVBgB5uL1qYkI14oD3_p6NQ14Xt/s1600/shutter+angel+2.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>

<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
It's been forever since I've been able to access my blog and post pictures. I've been computer challenged and I've done a ton of projects I've been wanting to share. <br />
<br />
If you know me, you know that I love to create using objects with a past. I like using recycled, used, upcycled "stuff" to create new things. It provides a challenge and creates unique, one of a kind results.<br />
<br />
I will be sharing the things I create on this blog, so that if someone else is inspired by what I create they can create something similar themselves.<br />
<br />
Here's a garden project I made a couple of weeks ago. I am calling it Mother & Child. I have installed it in our back yard beside my bottle tree. It looks like they are emerging from the trees, either coming back from a walk, or after having played on the tree fort or tire swing.<br />
<br />
I hope you like it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrB8QFVuz2n7mrCEbvxKSf_xdbzvWPdiDBR4aBCaVPPRD3zJ4BFvNM83xPUEzVbcYZptNQg7X_PbK0qPIaT-M0i_DqCz7i1E1nlZD9mKOsKnm7orqNryiOPNZjLUr_DPWEeQNabac95WW0/s1600/mother+&+child.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrB8QFVuz2n7mrCEbvxKSf_xdbzvWPdiDBR4aBCaVPPRD3zJ4BFvNM83xPUEzVbcYZptNQg7X_PbK0qPIaT-M0i_DqCz7i1E1nlZD9mKOsKnm7orqNryiOPNZjLUr_DPWEeQNabac95WW0/s1600/mother+&+child.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you want to make one of your own, here's how I made mine.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I found a louvered closet door at Habitat for Humanity's Restore and a window shutter. I cut the closet door in half for the mother.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I laid my shutters on my workbench and started pulling out things I thought might work for arms. I decided to cut a rocker (from an old rocking chair) in half for the child's arms. I tried several things for the Mother's arms but decided to use two pieces from an old barrel. They had a slight curve to them and gave her a rustic earthy feel. (I am a recycler and use whatever I can find to make things out of) I then decided on how I wanted the arms to look once done so I could cut the pieces and attach. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I added rebar legs so the shutters don't sit on the ground and wick moisture. I chose a drill bit the size of my legs and drilled holes into the bottom of the shutter. I used a marker to mark how far I had drilled into the shutter, and marked my drill bit. I then transferred that mark onto my rebar so I knew how far to tap it in. Then I gently tapped the rebar into the shutter with a hammer.</div>

Since my house is very tall, and boxy, I needed to be able to create height, pops of color, and visual interest. I love the brick but it can be boring.<br />
<br />
I had an old wooden 6' ladder that we didn't use anymore. It didn't work for me to stand up the normal way in my flower bed, so I decided to lean it against the back of the house. The front of the ladder is about 2' 1/2 to 3' out from the wall.<br />
<br />
I had found some old drawers in my neighbors trash. They were remodeling so I grabbed the old maple drawers they had thrown out. They don't have the same handles, nor do they match in size, but they fit my ladder pretty well. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcMlAd8j_uU_RoS5xeQ_fjEagJou14-ADTBoeS3_HKe5iYX-jb0_LsxrP9gNdhA2_Kj28RwhVC7Bathjwz0NDRr7P4LvoZpmxvmODeF7Ob6Hpv9C8LrPA6iQy24idfSAI-k2pPwyH8XSZI/s1600/garden+ladder+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcMlAd8j_uU_RoS5xeQ_fjEagJou14-ADTBoeS3_HKe5iYX-jb0_LsxrP9gNdhA2_Kj28RwhVC7Bathjwz0NDRr7P4LvoZpmxvmODeF7Ob6Hpv9C8LrPA6iQy24idfSAI-k2pPwyH8XSZI/s1600/garden+ladder+1.jpg" wya="true" /></a></div>
<br />
I wanted to have space between the flowers to set Junk so I decided to only add two drawers to my ladder. I took them back off the ladder and spray painted them both inside and outside. I drilled a couple of small drainage holes in the bottom, and once dry, put them back on the ladder.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-laStbTkgPSJ1dmRBaGwX2hggVgICk9eqDNysDhmIqFw7GYE8XcEsA9kKsGQRESBDhM-cAIWTHfLqhGu34GONxr-_3bH9Uif8bPWA6Sr0nKGAh8xTsAun9-qc1GJ8qjaksnqBKeQAm4-9/s1600/garden+ladder+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-laStbTkgPSJ1dmRBaGwX2hggVgICk9eqDNysDhmIqFw7GYE8XcEsA9kKsGQRESBDhM-cAIWTHfLqhGu34GONxr-_3bH9Uif8bPWA6Sr0nKGAh8xTsAun9-qc1GJ8qjaksnqBKeQAm4-9/s1600/garden+ladder+2.jpg" wya="true" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The first color I had chosen wasn't bright enough, so I painted the fronts again.<br />
<br />
Once I had the color I wanted, I filled the drawers with miracle grow potting soil and planted them with pink and purple petunias. I like pink or peach with purple, and I wanted the drawer color to compliment the flowers but not get overlooked either.<br />
<br />
Once planted I started looking thru my junk and found a couple of decorative bricks, a chippy old angel, an old spring with an old croquet ball sitting on top, and added a birdhouse to the top. I added an old mill stone and watering around the bottom, and as my perennials and annuals fill in, I hope it looks even better.<br />
<br />
I had previously made the angel out of an old chair back (windsor style chair) and some scrap wood. I spray painted it white, and added the lavender sign I had in my junk stash to give it more character. <br />
<br />
Here is my finished garden ladder.<br />

<br />
<br />
I drilled several small holes into the bottom of the boiler for drainage.<br />
<br />
I didn't want the soft copper to tear so I used a piece of scrap wood to attach the boiler to the shed wall, and help distribute the weight.<br />
<br />
Since the copper boiler is deep, I added several 2 liter plastic pop bottles to the bottom for filler.<br />
<br />
I added miracle grow potting soil on top of the plastic bottles and planted my flowers. Now I'm just waiting for them to fill out and get lush.<br />

<br />
Over the winter my grand-daughter Kaylee and I made a garden sparkler to dance in the breeze. We have installed it in the flower bed near the cornzebo. We enjoy watching it dance. <br />
<br />
If you are interested in making one for your garden, here is how we did it.<br />
<br />
I used 17 guage wire, random beads, needle nose pliers, side cutter pliers, and a zip tie. I wanted mine to be random lengths, so I didn't measure my wire lengths.<br />
<br />
I had a lot of beads left over from jewelry making projects, and crafts. I dumped them all onto paper plate so I could see the different colors, shapes etc.<br />
<br />
I made a loop in one end of the wire to keep the beads from coming off, then randomly in size and color threaded the beads onto the wire. I used crimp beads at random areas to create seperation (stops and starts in the beads) you could also create a loop in the wire and then continue threading. <br />
<br />
We threaded about 17 wires and then secured them with a zip tie. I used an old piece of pipe I already had, beat it into the groud far enough that it was sturdy, and then inserted the ends of the wire into the pipe. I then bent them a bit, and spread them out. They won't stay exactly that way becuase they move in the breeze, but they are very fun to watch dance.<br />

(hubby did help a bit too) People have asked how I made it, so I wanted to post it here where it was accessible. I found one on Pinterest I really liked and gave it my own spin. <br />
<br />
Here is the finished angel althought I haven't found the perfect halo yet, and may dry brush the angel white... I haven't decided yet.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I already had the shutter. It is approximately 4' tall and 15" wide. I used old scrap boards I had on hand. The bottom wing board is an old piece of trim that has a design. I thought it might look a little like feathers. The flowers are metal, in a rusty bucket, but you can make yours to hold a wreath, small bucket of flowers, a heart, etc. Hubby helped me drill holes up into the shutter sides to insert rebar so it wouldn't sit directly on the ground, but you can skip that step if you like.<br />
<br />
I laid my shutter on my work bench and laid boards underneath it where the wings would be. I decided about how long I wanted the top wing board, and cut if off, rounding the ends a little with the jigsaw. I then made each of the other two boards a little shorter than the one above it. I used rockers off an old broken rocking chair for the arms, but you can use a board and just shape them a bit. Once the wings were cut I turned them over, and screwed a piece of thin wood lath across all three to hold them together.<br />
<br />
When it came time to make the head I used a small bucket and traced a circle leaving room below it on the board to make shoulders to attach the head to the top of the shutter. <br />
<br />

<br />
I then put a screw down thru the top of the shoulder into the shutter body. <br />
<br />
One tip: When drawing your head and shoulders make them proportionate to the shutter body so they are too narrow or wide, and look like they match the body size.<br />
<br />
I'd love to hear from you if you make one, and found these directions helpful. Now have fun and be creative.<br />

I've decided to add a couple more pics. One will show how I attached the head/shoulders to the shutter body and the other shows how I reinforced the wings by securing them together.<br />

There is so much more to do in the summer that I want to be outside as much as possible. So, here are a few things we've been doing the last few weeks.<br />
<br />
Hubby and I went to see his brother who was visiting from Europe. He and his wife have a house on Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Road trips are the perfect opportunity for adventure. Once we knew when we were going I started looking for routes to take, and opportunites for adventure along each route. I had been wanting to check out LaRoche castle near Cincinnati for years. So that became stop number one. One man built this castle. He was 84 when he laid his last stone.<br />

<br />
<br />
From Cincinnati we drove to Branson, Missouri to zipline. (We passed the St. Louis arch on the way) We have both been wanting to zipline. We went to an obstacle course last year, which kicked my butt, but this time we just wanted to zip. We both loved it! It was in the mountains, and we did four ziplines.<br />

Golly I hate having my picture taken. This picture was my motivation to start dieting :) <br />
<br />
We also visited Meramac Caverns in Missouri. I had been there as a kid, but Mark had never been. We both love caves and we enjoyed this one. <br />

We've been working on the cornzebo. We finally got a table made for the cornzebo. Here are a couple pics... We made the table top out of old deck boards that someone had thrown out for the trash. These were 14' long. I wanted a 5' round table, so we cut 11 five foot pieces, scribed a circle on the back, numbered the boards and used the jigsaw to cut them out. We put supports on the bottom, and used this old terracotta tile as the base.<br />

I wanted to share a recent picture of the cornzebo. We used found rocks and created a flower bed around it. Now that the flowers are growing the cornzebo looks much more like it belongs with our house. What do you think?<br />

Myra</div>myomyohihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14410842404639931268noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3446468046881927321.post-66323447568168319172012-06-28T18:31:00.002-04:002012-06-29T17:33:50.230-04:00I've gotta climb up on my soapboxI was sitting in traffic Tuesday evening after work. I was northbound on High Street just outside Dublin. I was sitting under the 270 overpass, checking my email. I noticed movement to my left, and saw a guy jogging down the street. This area is very popular for walkers, joggers and bikers. This jogger was very ambitious and sprinted up the bricked embankment leading up to the bridge supports. When he got to the top he turned around and sat down. I was thinking he was probably tired and hot, it was hot and dry here for too many days. It appeared he looked at me, looking at him, and, in a very Jason Bourne sort of way, he lifted up his feet and slid back into the shadows. This caught my attention. Since I was sitting in the perfect spot to see him, I watched him stand up, turn his back to me, and disappear behind one of the steel i-beam supports. Up until this point I didn't think he had done anything too unusual, but he was clearly hiding behind the i-beam now. I immediately thought shooter. We had a shooter in the Columbus area a few years ago, and then I thought maybe he has an ex wife he is stalking, and is looking for a concealed point from where he can shoot her as she travels home from work. My mind was racing... I remember hearing sirens above me on 270, but that is not unusual, so I hadn't paid much attention to them.<br />
<br />
About that time I see a police officer emerge, from the vegetation at the bottom of the side of the embankment. Within a couple seconds a second officer emerges. Ah, now I see why he is hiding.... One officer proceeds north on High Street into an under street tunnel, while one is walking south towards me. I am in the north bound lane, and the center of three lanes moving north, with a left and right turn lane beside me. I roll down my window lean part way out, and yell "he's up there" while pointing to the spot where I had saw him hide a few seconds before. The officer asked "he's up there" and I yelled yes, he's up there, again pointing to the spot where he stood. The officer hesitated only a moment before continuing to walk south, away from the hiding man, looking everywhere but where I had indicated. GRRRRR<br />
<br />
The traffic light turned green and I needed to proceed north. I started to go on home deciding I had done my best to tell the officer where he was, only to be ignored, but then I decided the moron obviously was going to let him escape.<br />
<br />
I dialed 911 and when the dispatcher answered, I said "you have officers at High and emerald parkway in Dublin" she said yes we do. I asked if they were pursuing a man wearing camo pants. She said yes they were. I told her I had just watched him climb up into the bridge support and was hiding behind the third I-beam, on the north west corner. She asked which side of the river he was on, and I told her the High Street side. This overpass also crosses the scioto river a couple hundred yards to the east of where he was hiding. She asked my name, what I was driving and where I was at. I told her I was turning around and heading back to the overpass. It had probably been 3-4 minutes between the time I had left the spot where I saw him, and the time I got back there. By this time more police cars were arriving. <br />
<br />
The 911 dispatcher had told me to stay in my car until approached by an officer, but since none were immediately paying attention to me, I honked my horn at an officer nearby. I told him I was the person who had just called 911 and I had saw the man hide behind the 3rd i-beam, pointing to the spot. He walked away from me, so I got out of my car and followed him. I again tried to tell him I saw him hide behind that third i-beam - right there (pointing). Again he moved away from me. I kept following him and he kept walking away from me, pistol in one hand, and his other hand on his ear, I assume listening to the 911 dispatcher, or someone else. I tried one more time and again he backed away from me. He finally came over to me and said I was free to leave. What??? I decided they were all morons. I had an overwhelming urge to kick off my wedge sole sandals, and scamper up that damn embankment myself to drag him out. I was very upset that no-one seemed to be listening to me, or attempting to check out what I had told them. I looked up and saw officers leaning over the overpass above with rifles, surveying the area, looking for the felon. More and more officers were arriving, several standing on the sidewalk looking up at the area under the overpass, but not one officer making a move to drag his raggedy ass down from there. I again had an overwhelming urge to scramble up that embankment to where he had hidden, but decided it would only get me arrested, and possibly lose my job, because of getting arrested, so I got back in my kia and left. By that time there was a chopper circling overhead, and more sirens blaring in the distance. <br />
<br />
I couldn't go north towards home, because they had stopped traffic at the intersection, so I had to travel south back into Dublin, get on 161, cross the river, and go home via roads on the other side.<br />
<br />
I read that he had got caught robbing a home earlier in the day, and that a cruiser had spotted him on 315 nearby. I heard there was about a short chase down 270, when the felon suddenly stopped his car, jumped out, and ran down the embankment. I didn't see him emerge from the grass because I wasn't paying attention. I didn't see him until his movement caught my eye closer to me. At the time I first saw him he was jogging. He was not running as if the hounds of hell were in pursuit.<br />
<br />
Sorry to say the felon got away. I feel PRIMARILY because the first officer did not timely, nor assertively take action on the information I tried very hard to provide him. And I actually tried TWICE! to interact with the officers, and neither time did I feel they took me serious. I have to say my respect for those two officers is zero. I understand there was a lot of adreneline flowing, minds racing, fear, whatever, BUT had the first one headed my message, the felon would have been caught within minutes, instead of getting away. I heard they used dogs, and infared scanning to search for him. I wonder what happened to the old fashioned method of hands on? I assume they actually wanted to apprehend him or they wouldn't have risked a broken ankle scrambling down that embankment after him. <br />
<br />
I have almost gotten over my anger and disappointment that I tried to make a difference and couldn't.<br />
I haven't overcome my contempt for the two officers who belittled my information and validity of my words.<br />
I understand that it isn't safe to approach a felon who could possibly be armed, no matter who you are.<br />
I know he wasn't a murderer, rapist or serial killer...<br />
And I don't feel all officers are cookie cutters of these two. I know good cops. <br />
BUT...<br />
<br />
But I'm not over it yet. I'm definitely not over it...<br />
